Automating with Reason

Help Center > Introduction to Reason > Automating with Reason

Automating is when you make the knobs, buttons and slides move when you are not manipulating them and you have set a path for them. For instance, if you wish to have the frequency of an Envelope filter change during the song, you must either do it manually or automate it to do it automatically. To do this you must have an instrument with an Envelope filter attached to it. Then you must make sure that you have a sequencer track for the device you are automating. If you are manipulating an instrument, they usually have sequencer tracks already, but most effects don't, so to create one for an effect, you right click on the effect and click on "create" then click on "sequencer track for (the device you clicked on)." Once you have done that you can see the sequencer track near the timeline of the song, as seen here:

Once this is done, you can move to the part of the song you want to manipulate the effect on and prime for recording by pressing the record button then press the play button. Then you simply move the desired knobs when you want the effect to change. When you press the stop button to stop recording you will see a green box around what you changed:

It is now automated and you can keep it the way it is or right click on the green box and click Edit Automation. By doing this you will see:

You can use the pencil to draw a new path or use the line to make straight lines for the path the automation will move on. Now when you play the song, the Automation will make the knob turn at that specific part of the song!

Well this concludes the documentation for the intermediate Reason class and I hope you learned a great deal, if you want to reinforce this knowledge, please consider taking a Reason class!
