Connect to a Remote Server Using Fugu

Help Center > Connect to a Remote Server Using Fugu

This document describes how to establish a connection to a remote computer using Fugu. This popular program for the Macintosh OS X operating system helps you transfer files over the Internet. Fugu is useful for uploading HTML documents from your local computer to your Web server, downloading them for editing, and uploading files to your email account for attachments.

Before you start.

You will need,
  • a connection to the Internet,
  • an account on a Web server, and
  • Fugu installed on your Macintosh OS X computer. If you do not have Fugu installed, you can download it from the UW Internet Connectivity Kit (UWICK), which contains a free copy for University of Washington students, faculty, and staff.

Open Fugu.

On a Macintosh in the CTLT, choose the Fugu iconFugu icon from the dock at the bottom of the screen.

Can't find Fugu on your computer? Choose File > New Finder Window on Finder's menu, then search for "Fugu". If the software is installed on your computer, an icon for the program will appear in the window when the search finishes. Double click the icon to start the program.

Open a new connecton.

Fugu's screen is split into two panes (see the figure below). The left pane shows your local computer, and the right pane enables you to connect to a remote server. Once connected, the remote server will be displayed in the right pane.

If you are working on a campus computer or you acquired Fugu from the UW Internet Connectivity Kit (UWICK), shortcuts to Homer, Dante, and Aagaard may already be provided. After opening Fugu, check the drop-down list next to "Connect to:" and select the server that you wish to access by choosing either homer.u.washington.edu (for courses, faculty, staff, and departments), dante.u.washington.edu (for students), or aagaard.u.washington.edu (clinical staff).

Enter your server information.

If you are not working on a campus computer, or did not acquire Fugu from the UWICK, you will need to enter information about the server to which you want to connect.

  • Type the name of the server you wish to access in the "Connect to:" box.

UW Courses, Faculty, and Departments Web sites are located on homer.u.washington.edu

UW Students Web server is dante.u.washington.edu

  • Enter your UW NetID in the "Username:" box.
  • Ensure that the "Port:" is "22."
  • Leave "Directory:" blank.
  • Click "Connect".
  • Enter your password when prompted, and then click "Authenticate".
You should see a list of files and folders displayed in the right pane and your server's name in the title bar. If not, your connection was not successful and you should go back to step 3 and check for errors and then try to connect again.
