Styles
The use of styles in Word will allow you to quickly format a document with a consistent and professional look. Paragraph and character styles can be saved for use in many documents.
<insert image>Applying a Style
- Place the cursor in the paragraph or highlight the text you want the style to be applied to.
- Then on the Home tab in the Styles group select any of the available styles. Alternatively these are found in the right-click shortcut menu.
- To apply the same style to multiple paragraphs, double-click the Format Painter button in the Clipboard group of the Home tab and click in all the paragraphs that the style should be applied to. Press the key to disable the Format Painter.
Applying a Style from the Style Dialog Box
- Place the cursor in the paragraph or highlight the text you want the style to be applied to.
- Expand the Styles Dialog Box in the bottom right hand corner of the Styles group on the Home tab.
- Select the style you want use.
Creating a New Style from a Model
To create a new style off an existing style that you or someone else has created manually follow the steps below:
- Create the style you want by applying a font face, size, color, and other text attributes
- Select the newly created style
- Go to the Styles group on the Home tab and click on the arrow on the bottom right corner of the group to access the Styles Dialog Box
- Down in the bottom left corner click the New Style button
- Give your new style a name
- Click OK
- This can also be done with the right-click shortcut menu
Creating a Simple Style from the Style Dialog Box
To create your own new style:
- Go to the Styles group on the Home tab and click on the arrow on the bottom right corner of the group to access the Styles Dialog Box
- Down in the bottom left corner click the New Style button
- Give your new style a name
- Assign the attributes you want your style to have
- Click OK
Modifying or Renaming a Style
There are two methods to modify or rename your style.
- Right-click on the style you want to change and click Modify
- Rename in the Styles Dialog Box
- Go to the Styles group on the Home tab and click on the arrow on the bottom right corner of the group to access the Styles Dialog Box
- Down along the bottom in the middle click the Manage Styles button
- Select which style you want to change and select Modify
- Make the name change or modification
- Click OK
Deleting a Style
- Go to the Styles group on the Home tab and click on the arrow on the bottom right corner of the group to access the Styles Dialog Box
- Down along the bottom in the middle click the Manage Styles button
- Select which style you want to change
- Select Delete
