Laptop Frequently Asked Questions

I have a laptop computer and I want to connect it to the Internet somewhere on campus. Where can I do this and how do I configure my laptop so I can make the connection?

Laptop connections are available in the Odegaard Undergraduate Library and the Foster Business Library.

In Odegaard all the laptop ports are in most window bays that are around the perimeter of the building on the first and second floors. In each window bay there are four connections, the only one that will work for a laptop connection is the second port from the left. Laptop connections in the Foster Business Library are available on most study desks and tables in the library, as well as in the group study rooms.

In Odegaard you can check out ethernet cables if you do not have one at the Catalyst Help Desk.

Once you have physically connected your laptop you need to configure the computer's settings. The best and easiest way to accomplish this is to install the University of Washington Internet Connectivity Kit (UWICK) onto your laptop. You can purchase this kit for $19 at the University Bookstore. If you do not want to buy the kit, there are hard copy configuration directions at the Catalyst Help Desk in Odegaard and the reference desk in Foster.

Once you have changed the configurations, restart your computer, and after the computer has finished starting up you should be able to connect to the internet.

These instructions, plus some additional information, is provided by UW Technology at this web site: http://www.washington.edu/computing/connect/ If you need help setting up your laptop connection Catalyst Help Desk consultants are available and eager to help you in the Odegaard Computing Commons. Foster Business Library does not offer technical support for laptop connections.

I need to use a laptop computer. Where at the University can I go to check one out?

The OUGL Media Center no longer loans out laptop computers for in-building use. However, students can now reserve laptops for classroom presentations and other work from Classroom Support Services. More information and a reservation form are available at:http://www.washington.edu/classroom/computing/stf.html
