Move, Copy, Delete, Rename, and Download Pages or Files

Select an existing Web page or file.

To view your folders and files, expand the file tree in the left frame by clicking the expand icon (a plus sign in Windows and an arrow on the Macintosh) beside your folder (usually called "public_html"). Click once to select the file with which you wish to work. The "Page Summary” page will appear in the right frame for Web pages you created in SimpleSite, and the "File summary" page will appear for files not created with SimpleSite.

Viewing a page (or file) will display your Web page or file in a new browser window. To view a page or file on your Web site, you can either double-click the file in the file tree in the left frame, or follow the steps below:

  1. Select the Web page that you wish to view from the file tree in the left frame. The "Page/File summary" page will appear.
  2. Select View, found next to the page/file icon at the top of the page.

Move a page or file.

SimpleSite can move your pages or files to other folders on your Web site. To move a page or file, follow the steps below:

  1. Select the Web page that you wish to move from the file tree in the left frame. The "Page/File summary" page will appear.
  2. Select Move, found in the "File actions:" menu.
  3. Select the folder to which you want to move this page/file from the file tree in the left frame. The new folder will appear in the "Move to" field.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Moving Web pages into other folders will break any links created to that page in its original location. If you have links that point to the page in its current location, you will need to update the links to point to the file in its new location.

Rename your Web page or file.

You can rename your Web pages and files with SimpleSite. To rename a page/file, follow the steps below:

  1. Select the Web page or file that you wish to rename from the file tree in the left frame. The "Page/File summary" page will appear.
  2. Select Rename, found in the "File actions:" menu.
  3. Type the new file name in the space provided.
  4. Renaming a Web page or file will break any links created to that page with its original name. If you have links that point to the page, you will need to update the links to point to the file's new name.
    The name of your Web page or file cannot contain spaces or special characters. You can use a hyphen or an underscore in the file name. Be sure to include the appropriate file extension after the name, such as .shtml, .doc, or .jpg.
  5. Click Next.

Download, delete, or view the history for a page or file.

You can download an archive (compressed) version of your file to your local computer. Follow these steps to download your page/file:

  1. Select the Web page that you wish to download from the file tree in the left frame. The "Page/File summary" page will appear.
  2. Select Download, found in the "File actions:" menu.
  3. Review the estimated time to download the archive for your Internet connection speed. If the time is acceptable, click Download. If you are prompted to open or save the downloaded file by your computer, choose Save.

To delete your file, follow the steps below:

  1. Select the Web page that you wish to delete from the file tree in the left frame. The "Page/File summary" page will appear.
  2. Select Delete, found in the "File actions:" menu.
  3. Confirm that you want to permanently remove this file by checking the box, and then click Delete.
    WARNING: A deleted file is permanently lost and cannot be recovered.

SimpleSite keeps a log of every action performed on a file. This includes information about when the file was created and when it was last edited. To view the history of a file, follow the steps below:

  1. Select the Web page that you wish to view a history for from the file tree in the left frame. The "Page/File summary" page will appear.
  2. Select History, found next to the Last modified text on the summary page.
