Organize Your Project Site with Folders
Just like on your desktop computer, you can use folders to organize your Web site.
Organize your Web site.
Before you begin building a Web site, it's a good idea to think about how your site will be organized. If you need to rearrange your site after you have created pages and content, you might have to redo all your local links (links to files, pictures, and pages within your Web site) to reflect your files' new locations. You will save yourself a lot of time if you decide how your site will be organized from the start.
First, you must decide whether your supplemental account's space will be dedicated to this project site or whether it will be used for other projects as well. If this is the case, you should start by making a new folder for your project site.
You might also consider organizing your project site's resources by folder. For instance, if you plan on uploading your meeting notes to your project site, you might want to keep them in their own folder. This will keep your Web site orderly and your files easy to find.
It's also a good idea to keep your site organized by storing images or graphics in a single folder, usually called "images".
Note: Web security is applied to folders, not to separate files. Thus, organizing your Web site into folders allows you to secure some files (such as your site resources or meeting notes), while leaving the general Web site open to the public.
Using SimpleSite, you can easily apply security to restrict who is allowed to view the files within your Web folders. Read more about applying security to your project site.
Create a folder in SimpleSite.
To create a folder in SimpleSite, follow these steps:
- In the SimpleSite workspace, click New Folder in the top menu bar. The "Create a new folder" page will appear, and the left pane will be highlighted.
- Choose a location to save your new folder. SimpleSite uses the main directory "public_html" as the default location of your new folder. To save your new folder within one of your other existing folders, click once to select that folder in the left pane. The correct path will appear automatically in the "Location of new folder" field.
- Enter a name for the new folder in the "New folder name:" field. Make sure there are no spaces or special characters in the folder name; it's okay to use hyphens and underscores.
- Click Create Folder to create the new folder. After confirmation that the folder has been created successfully, the folder will appear in alphabetical order in the left pane.
