Apply for a Supplemental Account

Help Center > SimpleSite Help Center > Project Site Tutorial > Apply for a Supplemental Account

Before you create your project site, you must decide on which account to create it.

This document explains the advantages of applying for a supplemental account, details how UW accounts work with SimpleSite, and steps you through the process of applying for a supplemental account.

About supplemental accounts.

There are many advantages to using a supplemental account to store your project site, including:

  • A separate account with up to 300 MB of storage dedicated to your project group’s files
  • Site editing capability for all the members of your project group
  • A shorter URL

Apply for a supplemental account.

To apply for a supplemental account, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Web page listed below:
    http://www.washington.edu/computing/uwnetid/supplemental.html

If you have any general questions about supplemental accounts, the answers will be found on this page.
  2. Click Supplemental Account Request Form, found in the first section. If you cannot find the link, simply type or copy and paste the following URL into your Web browser's address bar:
    https://www.washington.edu/computing/forms/suppacct/
  3. Fill out the first portion of the form with your department name and your UW phone number.
  4. Choose a preferred login name. The account name will be a part of your project site's URL, so choose wisely.
New page Click thumbnail to view full image.
  5. Leave the type of supplemental account as Departmental.
  6. Next, you can add the names and UW NetIDs of two other registered users. A registered user can inquire about account status with UW Technology Services, as well as have the password reset. A registered user does not have authority to have the account deleted, renamed, or add new registered users.
  7. If you leave the project group before the project is completed, you will need to contact UW Technology Services directly and transfer the supplemental account ownership to another member of your project group.
  8. Decide where the account email will be sent.
  9. Set an expiration date for the account. If you are unsure about the project's end date, leave the expiration blank. This ensures your data will be saved for the duration of your project.
  10. When you are done with the form, click Submit Request. Your supplemental account will be created in 1-3 days.

You now have two options:

First, you can create your SimpleSite in your personal Web site. When your departmental site becomes available, you can then copy the Project site from your personal Web space to your departmental Web space.

Second, you can wait until your departmental site is available, and then create your project site directly in the supplemental account.

Activate Web publishing for your supplemental account.

  2. Click Manage Your UW NetID Resources.

Working with your supplemental account in SimpleSite

Now that you've gotten your supplemental account and enabled Web publishing, you can start creating a project site.

To work with a supplemental account in SimpleSite, you must log in with your personal UW NetID. This is because UW Technology wants individual people to be responsible for the content they are storing on the university servers. If you log in with your departmental UW NetID, you will get an error page. Close your browser and log into SimpleSite again with your personal UW NetID.
