Your Web Site's Usage Statistics

Help Center > SimpleSite Help Center > Your Web Site's Usage Statistics

Enable Web site statistics.

You must first turn on generation of statistics for your Web site. Statistics are generated and updated nightly, so you may have to wait up to 24 hours to view your Web statistics. Follow the steps below to enable Web Site statistics:

  1. On the SimpleSite Home page, select the Web site for which you want to enable statistics from the "Available Web sites" drop-down menu. If the Web site you want to work with is not listed in the menu, click Update your Web site list to refresh your list of Web sites.
  2. View Statistics Click thumbnail to view full image.
Select Manage this Web site's usage statistics and then click Next. You will move to the "Manage Web site statistics" page. If you have already enabled statistics, you will see a link to view your statistics (see illustration on the right). See the view statistics section below for assistance with interpreting your Web statistics.
  3. To enable Web statistics, check the box next to "Enable Web site statistics."
  4. Choose if you want to save or delete the nightly log file. Each connection to your Web site is recorded in the access log file, which will grow large quickly if you have a popular Web site. To conserve disk space, you can have SimpleSite delete the original log file each night after it creates the statistical summary. If you intend to do your own site usage analysis of this log file, then you will want to save the log files. However, in most cases you will want to check the box next to "Reset the log file nightly" to save space.
  5. Since images on your site are separate files, the log records each time an image displays on a page. To exclude images in your statistics report, check the box next to "Ignore images..."
  6. When you're done, click Save. Statistics are automatically generated and updated nightly, so you will have to wait until the next morning (up to 24 hours) before viewing your statistics.

View statistics

After you have enabled statistics, and waited for your first statistics to be updated, you can view your Web statistics. Follow the steps below to view statistics for your Web site:

  1. From the SimpleSite Home page, select Manage this Web site's usage statistics, and then click Next.
  2. To view statistics, click the link provided at the top of the page. A new window will open that displays the summary of your Web site statistics.
  3. Statistics Click thumbnail to view full image.
To view the statistics for a specific month, click the month name in the "Summary by Month" table (see illustration on the right).

The usage statistics of each Web site includes average daily and monthly totals for the number of hits, visits, files, and pages. To learn more about interpreting Web statistics, including the difference between a "hit" and a "visit", read the PETTT report "Evaluating your SimpleSite with Log File Analysis" or visit the Webalizer Quick Help page.

Set security on your Web site statistics.

You can change who can view your Web site's statistics. Web statistics are stored in their own folder in your Web site; you can set security options on the folder to restrict viewing privileges. This procedure is the same as setting security options on any Web folder, so just follow our instructions for setting security options for Web folders. You may change these security options as often as needed.

In order for others to view your Web statistics, your must provide them with the URL. The URL for your Web statistics is listed at the top of the "Manage Web site statistics" page. The URL will always be your main Web address plus the "webstats" directory; for example, http://staff.washington.edu/youruwnetid/webstats/ .
