The Web Publishing series focuses solely on the coding behind Web design: it does not encompass creating or optimizing audio or video or other multimedia content for your Web site. We do, however, offer workshops in other series suited specifically for these purposes.

Graphics

In creating a visually-appealing Web site, it is sometimes impossible to achieve visual effects without the use of graphics. You'll certainly want to learn how to optimize them for use on your site.

1. Adobe Photoshop
   Adobe Photoshop is an industry-standard photo editing application used extensively in the Web design process. This workshop focuses on Photoshop basics and using it to re-touch and work with digital photographs.
2. Adobe ImageReady
   Sometimes referred to as "photoshop for the web," ImageReady is bundled with Photoshop and is designed to bridge the gap between Photoshop and the Web: it allows you to optimize your Photoshop files in a variety of different image formats, and it allows you to create frame-based animations, image maps, and simple image rollovers.
3. Adobe Illustrator
   Adobe Illustrator allows you to create vector graphics, images composed of lines and shapes and gradients that can be re-sized to any dimensions without any loss of quality. If you are interested in creating a logo or line art graphics, then you'll want to take Illustrator.

Video

If you plan to incorporate video on your site, you might consider taking Digital Video. Similar to this workshop but for video, Digital Video, the workshop, provides an overview of how to capture video from your camera to your computer and what software is used in the field.

UNIX

If you plan to work at all in the "Advanced Features Phase", then you will almost certainly need to know the basics of the UNIX (or Linux) operating system. A significant number of web servers run Apache on Unix or Linux (including the UW Web Servers), and sometimes it is much easier to work directly on the server. This is particularly necessary for Web Site Security and MySQL Installation.
