Making music, publishing podcasts and creating other digital-audio productions is more accessible then ever before. With products like Apple Garageband, audio production for the amateur audiophile is as easy is the click of a mouse button. For the more adventurous, you can learn the basics of audio-recording, MIDI sequencing and loop-based music creation in the overview workshop for LST's state of the art Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). Once you've tackled these basics, you can turn it up notch or two, by learning, the industry-standard applications, ProTools and Reason.

Apple GarageBand

Apple GarageBand is an excellent amateur digital audio-editing program. With GarageBand you can record music, mix pre-recorded music, and create podcasts. In this workshop, you will learn how to create podcasts, mix and loop music, and add audio tracks to video. Other topics include creating sound effects, sequencing MIDI files, exporting to iTunes, and microphone setup.

ProTools

ProTools is the industry standard for audio production. From a simple interview to the sound effects for a full-length film, ProTools can handle it all. In this introductory workshop, you will learn the basic functions of audio production and audio editing with ProTools. You will also discover how to add effects and how to bounce your finished audio. Recording Voice-Overs

How do you record a voice-over that is clear, concise, and works well with video or digital presentation? Why is it best to record voice-overs in a “dead” space and when should you filter vocals? “Recording Voice-Overs” is a beginner workshop designed to teach users how to use the digital audio workstation to overdub or record voice for use in areas such as film and digital presentations, where recording and communicating clear, professional vocals is a must.

The DAW, located in Odegaard Library, is a valuable resource for individuals looking to record, create, and edit digital audio. In this overview workshop, learn the basics of creating no-frills audio content, which among other things, can be distributed via the Web. Our student instructors will walk you through the fundamentals of audio hardware, and introduce you to the available digital audio environments, such as digiDesign's ProTools and Propellerhead's Reason.

Reason

Reason 2.5 is one of the most comprehensive digital music composition programs available. In this introductory workshop, you will learn how to get a basic sequence started. You will also get an overview of all the devices, from drum machines to analog synthesizer modules. This workshop is designed for beginners and no prior sequencing experience is necessary.
